The Program

The Adobe Developers of Idaho and the Boise Adobe Users and Graphic Design Group have come together to start a new program called <dev>. <dev> offers non-profit companies an opportunity to work with a team comprised of user group members to develop a Rich Internet Application (RIA) for their organization. RIAs are web-based or desktop-based applications that allow for a more user-friendly and interactive experience than traditional websites or applications. When they sign up, interested organizations should describe in detail the type of projects they would like to have developed. Projects should not be time-sensitive or mission-critical (critical for keeping the organization in business).

The Developers Group of Idaho is also looking for experienced individuals who would be interested in developing and designing RIAs that fulfill non-profit organizations’ needs.

The Purpose

Non-profit organizations will receive a quality end-product, gain insights into the benefits of new technologies, and build useful networks with local developers and designers.

Rich Internet Application (RIA) development involves a team-based environment. User groups are an excellent way to meet and collaborate with other skilled developers who share an excitement for Adobe tools and RIA Technology. Throughout the project, team members will gain useful experience while providing a quality end-product for selected non-profit organizations.

The Process

Interested non-profit organizations should fill out an application describing the organization and the types of projects that might benefit the organization. Also, spread the word to other organizations that might benefit from this development opportunity.

Interested developers and designers should fill out an application, describing their qualifications and experience in detail. Project teams will be organized based on qualifications and availability. Each team will ideally consist of the following: one Project Manager, one System Architect, a programmer for client-side scripting, a programmer for server-side scripting, and one or two designers.

Throughout the project, teams will be expected to document project progress through a journal or blog. Help will be available and should be utilized. When each project is completed, the team and the finished product will be evaluated by the user groups.

The limitations and expectations of the program will be discussed with team participants as well as the non-profit organizations. All team members will need to address how they would like to handle intellectual property (IP) and creative licensing before the project commences.

We expect this to be a fun way for our group members to sharpen their skills while contributing to the community. We invite all to get involved by applying at http://adidaho.org/devRIA.php.
